Comics Showcase: Hell Teacher Nube


Hell Teacher Nube/Aka. Jigoku Sensei Nube (Japanese: 地獄先生ぬ~べ~), created by the collaborative efforts of writer Sho Makura and artist Takeshi Okano is an occult classic and is probably successful horror shonen manga. 

The series follow Meisuke Nueno, nicknamed Nube, who is both an exorcist and a teacher for a 5th-grade class at an elementary school in Japan. The series follow Nube through the many weird, chaotic and downright silly and insane encounters as he and his students face with many forces of the Supernatural.

What makes Nube stands out from other horror manga is that apart from suspense, it also serve comedy and moral guidance. Each chapter usually involved one of Nube's many students to commit some misgivings that incur the wraith of the supernatural and needed Nube's help. The solution however almost certainly involves with Nube guiding the said student to know what they have done wrong and correct their own mistakes. 

The manga utilize many monsters from traditional Japanese folklore. Thus, the manga also familiarize readers to Japanese culture.
The series was immensely successful and ran for 276 chapters from 1993 to 1999, and result in a 49-episode anime series by Toei Animation aired from 1996-1997 and a drama series aired on NTV that aired in Autumn 2014. Though the main series have long ended, there were various spin-off series over the years and recently a sequel that began in 2014 and is still running.
