Comics Showcase: Bastard

Today, I want to introduce another comics, "Bastard", written by Youngchan Hwang and illustrated by Carnby Kim. The comics packed with suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety that pulls people into the story and holds them captives. The story revives around Jin Seon, a moody young man raised by a single father. As you can probably tell from the title, Jin doesn't quite get along with his father. The complex relationship between Jin and his father is the focus of the story.

To everyone, his father is seemingly a great man and caring father. He is not only a successful CEO, a philanthropist and is courteous and kind to everyone. Hence, there shouldn't be any reasons why Jin should complain about his father, right?

Indeed, even the female lead thought of Jin as another spoiled brat...

But is a psychological thriller. Obviously, Jin's father lived a double life. At night, Jin's father is a serial killer who force him to be his accomplice since he was a child. He kept up with it until he met Kyun Yoon, the female lead, the love of his life but his father's newest target. I don't want to spoil you too much but from there, the story  follows Jin as he struggles to keep his father's hands off his love while fighting out a life of his own.

The story, while filled with cliches, is very well written. The author kept a good cast of few but effective characters that really brings out the mood.  Moreover, while there are many sudden turns. The transitions between them are smooth and does not appear awkward at all.  The only complain is the art which I found a little too cartoony for a story as dark and deep such as this one. Though the author did make up a little by using the right colors. Overall, "Basard" is a great read.
