Do you like survival horrors, but got tired of the use of zombies as a trope? Let me introduce you to Shibya Kingyo 渋谷金魚 (Shibuya Goldfish), a Japanese manga comics by Hiroumi Aoi.
The story follows an average nice guy named Tahatsu Tsukiyoda. Like every protagonist in a survival horror, he has a peaceful everyday life when it comes to an end one day when giant man-eating goldfish overtake Shibuya District in Tokyo without warning.
The goldfish float around the city, eating as many humans they can. Interestingly, although they do not live in the water, they retain some habits of a goldfish. For instance, they enjoy hiding under shades, have poor eye sight, rely primarily on sound and smell to hunt for their human preys.
Everyone try to escape, only to found Shibuya and themselves enclosed in a fish cage. Facing impossible odds, could Tahatsu make it out alive?
Overall, both the story and the artwork is great. It is also fresh to have goldfish chasing people down in a survival horror than the common tropes of zombies or giant bugs. However, story-wise, that is all to it. It is just your typical survival horror genre, a lot of love, loss, betrayal and gore. At the time of writing, the series is running on SquareEnix's Gangan Joker magazine. You can read the read the first chapter in Japanese for free on the official website here. There are also options to buy the physical and electronic volumes at the bottom of the site.
